The Lucky Thirteen

The 11th March saw TRC head into the spring months with it’s first rave run of the year, organised by coach Adrian Tyas. Read on to find out all about it.

First TRC Rave Run of the Year

Holywell Bay Rave Run with Adrian Tyas, March 2012

Thirteen! Raring to go at Holwell Bay: L-R Amanda, Jenny, Ellie, Annie, Stephen, (Me), Debbie, Graham, Helen, Nigel, Phil J, Will and Phil S

What a lovely sunny spring morning and ideal for a run on the Coast Path. That’s what I told everyone who arrived in the Beach Car Park at Holywell Bay on a bright Sunday morning. After the photos, we set off towards the beach and turned on to the sand dunes and climbed up the sandy path by the golf course. Everyone had decided to run the longer distance of just under 8 miles.

It was quite a climb for the first mile and when we reached the top I made my first mistake of telling everyone that was the hardest part of the run out of the way. My memory can be selective or maybe my glass is always half full but, whichever, I was to come in for quite a bit of stick later!

Holywell Bay Rave Run with Adrian Tyas, March 2012

Towards Polly Joke

I had marked the run in sawdust similar to Hashes so nobody could get lost and now we got into a field this helped us on our way to the coast path and our first stunning view of the whole of the beautiful bay. We were running pretty much as a group and kept re-grouping. This was a nice flat part of run to get up some speed right up to the descent to the beach at Polly Joke . So far very enjoyable and wonderful scenery.

We ran on the beach and then up to the Coast Path for the second ascent towards the Bowgie. So yet another “little” climb until we got to the top and had the best view yet of Crantock , The Gannel and in the distance the distinctive Headland Hotel and Pentire Head . At this stage we stopped to admire the view and have a catch up. To our right was the Bowgie Hotel which is now in the pink – you certainly could not miss it . We could clearly see in front of us that there would be lots of steps ahead both up and down but we were about half way and the views made up for the hard work to come . Everyone was keeping together well and our next destination was Crantock and more sand dunes.

Towards Crantock

After leaving Crantock we had a short road section before making towards Treago Farm and Cubert Common before the last mile which I swear was all downhill and flat –  honestly !! Well a most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday morning and lucky to be blessed with great weather. Then to the Treguth Inn for food , drink and a chat where we met Dave who had been unable to join us for the run.

So grateful thanks to everyone for joining me on my Rave Run and hope to see you at the next one in St. Agnes on Friday 20th April –  where there may be some more hills and spectacular views!

Rave Run – Holywell Bay

Sunday 11th March 2012, 11am

Join Adrian Tyas for a spectacular run at Holywell Bay, near Newquay.

Holywell Bay, 2011

Holywell Bay, 2011

Adrian has devised a rave run that includes 3 distances suitable for all abilities. There’s no pressure to run at any particular pace, go at your own pace and enjoy the stunning views along the way. Each group will be given clear route maps and descriptions and Adrian will obviously be there too! Meet back at Holywell Bay for a drink and/or a meal at one of the pubs in the village.

Adrian says “The first time I ran this route I thought it wasn’t too hilly, but when I downloaded my Garmin I realised it was quite undulating i.e. a few ups and downs but not really long hills . It starts in sand dunes, then on to the coast path and finishes with footpaths. The views are spectacular and 3 beautiful beaches are visited on the longer run . The finish is great – downhill, then a nice flat run in the valley by a stream back to the Car Park.”

When and Where to Meet

Meet in the National Trust Car Park in the village of Holywell bay, for an 11 am start.

Directions and Parking

From the A30 junction at Chiverton Cross roundabout (where Starbucks is) take the A3075 exit towards Perranporth and Newquay. Stay on the A3075 right through Goonhavern until you reach the Cubert/Newlyn East cross roads. Take the left turn to Cubert. Carry on through Cubert to Holywell Bay. The start of the run is in the NT car park, right down as far as the road goes where you get on to Holywell beach. There is no charge at the National Trust car park at this time of year.

The Routes

View from the sand-dunes at Holywell Bay, near Newquay

View from the sand-dunes at Holywell Bay

View of the cliffs from the coastal path at Holywell Bay, near Newquay

From the coastal path

  • Route 1, 4.6 miles or 5.5 miles. From Holywell Bay you’ll run along the coast path to Polly Joke beach where you take the footpath inland on the return leg. You’ll pass a small lake and golf courses where the two routes diverge. The longer route is much nicer passing “a lovely stream and dunes”.
  • Route 2, 8 miles
You’ll follow the coast path until you reach Polly Joke beach staying on the coast path all the way to Bowgie and Crantock beach. You’ll return on inland paths through golf courses and dunes until you eventually meet the return routes for the shorter distances.

Refreshments

After the run we’ll meet up at one of the two pubs in the village, St.Piran’s Inn and Treguth, both of which serve food on Sundays, should you have worked up an appetite!

Rave Run – see the light!

Wednesday 14th March 2012, 6.30pm

This club night will be a little bit different: instead of meeting at the club house, meet at Skinner’s Brewery on Newham Road for a moonlit trail run!

We’ll be running in our usual pace based groups out and back along the Newham Trail, which is predominantly a level track but could potentially be muddy in places, so trail shoes would be a good option if you have them (don’t worry if you don’t!). Since we’ll be running off road please bring a torch or head torch – and if you have any spare that you wouldn’t mind others sharing it would be great if you could bring those along too!

After the run we’ll be meeting back at Skinners where a hot pasty will be waiting for you and the bar will be open. There’ll also be a short presentation of the annual TRC trophies given for Runner of the Year (male and female), Most Improved Runner of the Year (male and female) and Club Person of the year. (These are awarded at the AGM in June, so it won’t be long before they’re handed on to this year’s recipients!).

Come along, do something a bit different, meet up for a pasty and a presentation and have FUN!!! Look forward to seeing you there.

Directions

Skinners is just passed Tesco car park entrance on the right hand side of the road. The brewery has a small car park, but it may also be possible to park on the road.

Rave Run – St Agnes

Friday 20th April, 6.30pm

Claire Longman takes us on a spring time rave run that includes a few miles along the cliffs of the dramatic north coast before heading inland along footpaths and country lanes, with an optional loop over The Beacon. There’s plenty to see along the way including the engine house at Wheal Coates, the cove at Chapel Porth and the spectacular views of both the north and south coast from the top of the Beacon (on a clear day!). Round it all off with a pint and/or a meal at The Driftwood Spars.

St Agnes Beacon with fields of daffodils

St Agnes Beacon in spring

When and Where to Meet

Meet outside the Driftwood Spars at Trevaunance Cove, St Agnes. Time tbc.

Directions and Parking

From Chiverton Cross roundabout (on the A30) follow the signs to St Agnes. Just before the village there’s a mini roundabout, take the right exit through the village centre. Continue right down into the village passing the shops and following the road round to the right past the church, signposted Peterville and the beach. At the next roundabout take the left exit down to Trevaunance Cove (beach).

There are several car parks: the first is a large pay and display on your left, or you could continue past this to The Driftwood’s small car park (they make a charge, which you can reclaim if you spend over a certain amount in the pub), or beyond here there’s one more small car park for which you pay on entry.

The Routes

South West Coast Path above Chapel Porth, St Agnes UK

Dramatic scenery near St Agnes

There are two circular routes to choose from, with an optional loop over St Agnes Beacon adding about a mile. Both routes start and finish at Trevaunance Cove and can be described as “hilly”, but you can take a breather for refreshments at the Driftwood Spars and (depending on opening hours) part way round at the NT cafe at Chapel Porth.

  • Route 1. 4.7 miles. You’ll head westward along the coast path for just over 1.5 miles before heading inland at the coastguard station. If it’s a clear day we recommend going up over the Beacon to take in the breathtaking panoramic views (this is included in the 4.7 miles). At this point you’ll join the main route again back down to the coastal path and round to Trevaunance.
  • Route 2. 7 miles (excluding 1m Beacon loop). You’ll run from Trevaunance Cove to Chapel Porth on coastal paths that take in the old mining works at Wheal Coates. At Chapel Porth the route heads inland along footpaths before joining country lanes at the foot of the Beacon. If your legs are still feeling strong, you can take a detour up over the top, or you can follow footpaths back down to the coast and on to Trevaunance Cove and a well earned drink!

Refreshments

The Driftwood Spars (both routes); Chapel Porth NT cafe (7 mile route), dependent on opening hours.

Rave Runs 2012

As the end of 2011 draws near we’re trying to get the club’s 2012 calendar a little more organised since there’s so much going on! Remember Rave Runs – favourite runs suggested by our members? Well in 2012 we’re aiming to organise more than the one run we managed in Probus this year, suggested by Richard – fantastic as it was!

We’re planning on 6 runs, 1 a month for 6 months from spring throughout the summer. We’ve had suggestions for runs in/around St Agnes on the north coast, Ruan Lanihorne on the Roseland, Trelissick near Truro and a few others besides (please let us have your ideas too!), however there’s a bit of debate as to which day most people would prefer to run a Rave Run on. Some prefer the idea of meeting on a Wednesday club night as we know most of us are free, others like the idea of making it a bit of a social gathering and prefer a Friday so that finishing up at the pub wouldn’t be a problem the next day! Then there’s those that prefer the weekend and maybe going for a run in the morning and having lunch together somewhere afterwards. Of course it would probably be best to mix it up a bit to keep us all happy, so with that in mind let us know which day/s you’d prefer by clicking a few buttons in the poll!

The poll will be open for 10 days and you’ll find it in the sidebar on the right. You can vote for as many suggestions as you want, as well as make your own suggestions or comments :)  Happy voting!

Raving about Probus

No, not deja vu! We’re not off to Golden Mill and Grampound, but there’s a Rave Run at Probus again this coming Friday, 29th July. This time it’s the Probus 10k thats going to be the challenge for the evening’s proceedings, with the Hawkins Arms being the ‘Rave HQ’.

If you fancy giving it a go, we’re meeting up in the pub’s car park at 6.30 pm (please park in the village hall car park). If you can’t run, why not call in to the Hawkins Arms to meet up for a drink afterwards?  You never know, the sun might even be shining and we can sit in the pub’s large garden!

Hopefully see a few of you there. Cheers, Rob Cockings. 07971827436

A run in Probus to rave about!

Probus Rave Run 1st July 2011

Probus Rave Run - out side The Hawkins Arms, 2011

The Probus line-up! Andrew, Phil, Richard, Rachel, Stephie, Cath (behind), Anna, Kay and Graham

We couldn’t have been any luckier with the weather when a group of us TRCers met outside The Hawkins Arms on Friday evening – it was so warm and sunny it actually felt like summer!  It was the first Rave Run of the year; for the uninitiated a Rave Run is a club member’s favourite run that they share with anyone that wants to turn up and run together. In Probus there was a choice of two routes: a longer one of approximately 7 miles and a shorter route that was just under 4 miles (although both started along the same roads for the first few miles). I’d been feeling excited about the new run all day and as Richard handed out the maps I realised I wasn’t going to be disappointed! It really was a great route, but don’t just take my word for it…

A note from The Leader

I REALLY enjoyed the run on Friday night! The weather was perfect, the routes seemed popular with everyone, and, most importantly, everyone appeared to have a good time. It was a really sociable social run too, with a convivial gathering in the beer garden afterwards. It typified what a rave run is all about, the pure pleasure of running in beautiful surroundings, in the company of like minded people.

Rave Review from Rachel

Probus church 2011

Probus Church at the centre of the village

Probus Rave Run………… said the Facebook events page, an informal run for all abilities! Well I thought it better be for all abilities because I haven’t run for over 5 weeks and even when I was running I was always at the back of the group!! So I decided to go along and be last somewhere other than on the streets of Truro :o It was a beautiful evening, a really nice comfortable temperature to run and I was pleased to have been joined by Kay another ‘back of the group’ runner (i’m sure she won’t mind me saying that!) We were met at Probus by 6 or 7 other VERY friendly Truro Running Club runners. We started with a ‘rave run photo’ and a chat about where the group was going to run, and where Kay and I were going to leave the track in order to complete a shorter route. The run itself was lovely, very picturesque (a pleasant change from the usual Truro scenery) We set off up through Probus and then on through countless other roads, tracks and routes. I don’t know exactly where we went as I have a terrible sense of direction so I was incredibly thankful when Kay took charge of the map :o After the run, which was far enough for me at 3.7 miles, we made it back to the Hawkins Arms and sat outside in the beer garden for a refreshing soft drink. I enjoyed a lovely evening run and I can honestly say that if more of these runs were planned I would definitely be attending. Thank you Richard for arranging the run and to everyone who attended and made the after-run drink in the beer garden a very pleasant experience. After completing the club run on Wednesday and the rave run at Probus I don’t feel quite so guilty about having my usual Friday night glass of wine, I think my wine this week has been well and truly earned :o

Rachel Palmer

Photos and route maps will be published here soon, so call back in the next day or two!

A big thanks to Richard for organising the run! When’s the next one?!!!  If you’ve got a favourite run you’d like to share just let someone on the committee know and we’ll get it organised!

Rave Run!

What’s a rave run then? It’s a favourite leisure run suitable for all abilities suggested by one of our members. Rave runs are usually held at the weekend and explore areas around or near Truro and begin and end near an eatery/pub of some description – somewhere for everyone to gather at the end of the run for a refreshing drink, coffee, food and chat…  Sound like fun?  Come and join in the first one of the year in Probus, suggested by TRC veteran Richard Wilson!

Probus, FRIDAY 1st July (not Saturday as announced at Club), 6.30pm

  • Meet at Hawkins Arms car park, Fore Street, Probus.
  • Parking at Hawkins is limited; please park in Village Hall car park, just down the road (entrance by the Lemon Tree cafe).
  • Route A scenic and undulating 7.5m (or a 5m shorter version) from Probus, out to Golden Mill and the Fal valley.
  • Food afterwards at the Hawkins if required, but please notify Richard of numbers (phone contact 01726 883460 / 07773 9851130)

If you have a favourite run that you think others would enjoy contact anyone on the committee and we’ll make it a date!
