 Isobel Wykes - superstar!!!
Isobel Wykes consistently takes prizes at everything she enters and has recently been selected to represent Cornwall in this year’s Peninsular Challenge.
The challenge is between Cornwall and Devon At the Plymouth Hoe 10 mile race on 19th February and Izzy will be part of the 4 woman team, which requires 3 to score. Other members of the ladies team include Emma Stepto of CAC, Naomi Tier also of CAC and Anne Luke of TT. The men’s team consists of Dan Alsop STA,  Dan Nash ECH, Peter LeGrice MBH,  Noel Kindon CAC , Colin Snook CAC, Justin Thomas CAC.
No doubt our very talented Izzy will make Cornwall, and of course TRC, proud – we wish her a fantastic race and will be supporting her all the way!
Rob will back at the club this Wednesday taking any willing volunteers (aka masochists!) onto Bodmin Road for a coached session of hill reps. (Perfect timing for Mounts Bay 10k coming up soon). There will of course be other groups doing City Centre Loops if you prefer to take part in these.
Coaching News
Amelya at the Great Flat Lode race 2011
Rob welcomes Amelya Lyndsay on to the coaching team after she successfully completed the Leader in Running Fitness course held at Biscovey Junior school on Saturday. Congratulations Amelya – and thank you for all your enthusiasm and commitment to the club!
Adrian Tyas also had the third day of his Coaching in Runners Fitness course a couple of weekends back and although he’s still got plenty of work to do to before he gets to assessment day, it looks like all the hard work will pay off and we’ll soon have a fully fledged CiRF in the ranks. In the mean time Adrian’s using the Monday night runners as guinea pigs, so why not lend your support and come along and join in?!
If you’re interested in joining the coaching team, there are a number of courses available (which are paid for by the club), along with lots of support from the team, so please see Rob for more details.
Richard, TRC’s organiser of the New Year’s Day Brown Willy Run, gives us the latest update of what turned out to be another memorable New Year’s Day event in more ways that one this year!
Helen and David on top of the world - well, Cornwall!
When Helen Jordan accepted Gary Caunter’s marriage proposal on the summit of the highest hill in Cornwall, on New Year’s Day, it was the icing on the cake for another brilliant Brown Willy Run, in which Gary and Helen were running. They celebrated with a bottle of bubbly supplied by Truro Running Club, who hosted the annual 7 mile moorland charity run, which takes in some very testing terrain between Jamaica Inn and Brown Willy. This year 315 people registered at Jamaica Inn, although an informal count on the moor tallied 327 runners.
The first man home was Dan Nash, from the moorland village of Minions, a member of East Cornwall Harriers, in an incredible time of 48:02. Dan is no stranger to the event. A few years back, as a young boy, he beat all but a handful of top quality runners in his debut.
Second man home was Dan Rodgers, of Callington, in 51:16, a superb time, given the very boggy and slippery conditions, yet still over 3 minutes behind Dan Nash. Third home was another Dan, Daniel Hooper, all the way from Carmarthenshire, in Wales, in a time of 53:21.
The first lady home was Isobel Wykes, from Probus, in a very fast 58:39. She is a member of Truro Running Club, and a rising star on the Cornwall running scene. Although more accustomed to road running, Isobel dealt superbly with the very challenging muddy conditions. Isobel was followed by Clare Donovan, who turned in a brave run.
The Brown Willy Run started many years ago, as a bunch of friends blowing away the New Year’s Eve cobwebs, under the guidance of Frank Squibb, to whom we owe an immense debt of gratitude. It’s now grown to over 300 runners, but it remains an informal event, where like minded people can enjoy a friendly run in beautiful surroundings, welcoming the New Year in with the same spirit as Frank and his friends intended.
We also need to thank the landowners and tenant farmers, and the staff and management of Jamaica Inn, without whose generous spirit, the event could not take place.
This year, well over ÂŁ800.00 was raised, to be divided between Cornwall Hospice Care, and the Cornwall Search & Rescue Team, who turn out in force to ensure our safety every year, and always perform to the highest standards of professionalism, and always with a friendly smile.
Thanks also to the gallant volunteers who man registration and marshal the event, with such willingness.
Richard Willson
 Team Truro!
A good turn out last night (of the knowledgeable ones!) saw Team Truro scoop another award – winners of the Crab and Ale House pub quiz! No trophy this time, but a free meal at the Crab and Ale. It was a close run contest, won on a tie breaker: “Which year was the fast food restaurant Subway formed?”. Thankfully, it was the closest answer that won – and we were only out by 20 years or so! How close can you get? (Goggling it is cheating!!!!)
News Editor
If you’ve noticed the lack of a paper newsletter these last few months you’ll be pleased to hear that Claire Longman has recently taken over the role of Editor.
Diane revived and updated the newsletter format earlier this year, keeping us up to date with goings-on, but has now resigned due to the commitments of the THM Race Director.
Best wishes to Claire in her new role – and happy reporting!!!
Don’t forget that you can email Claire or speak to her at the club if you have any interesting news that you think should be included: news@trurorunningclub.org.uk
Vacancies!
- We still need a Race Director for the Truro race in the DAN 5k Series later in the year. The role will include organising the course and marshals, sorting out prizes and presentations, reporting to the committee, etc. No previous experience is necessary, but good organisational skills will be essential! Of course you wouldn’t be working alone as Rob (who also organises the whole series) would be there to guide you and give you a helping hand, and you can also organise a sub-committee. Â If you’re interested please contact Rob by email or see him at the club.
- Finally we need a new Membership Secretary to take up post in 2012, as Nick will be retiring from the role after many years. This is a pivotal role on the club’s committee and Nick assures us it’s varied and interesting! He is currently responsible for all membership issues, registering members with UKA, supporting new members, keeping track of  subs and so on. Anyone interested in the role should be “computer literate” but  experience isn’t necessary as Nick is very happy (and keen!) to work alongside someone taking over the role for a couple of months, to give guidance and advice. If you’re interested please contact Nick by email or see him at the club on a Monday or Wednesday evening.
If you’d like to be involved in the organising or running of the club in any other way please feel free to contact any one on the committee to let us know – we can always do with more help!!

Hopefully recovering well after an epic run in Greece, Mark Maidwell-Smith reports from where it all began.
Athens Classic Marathon 13th November 2011
 Running for a fantastic pb!
Athens has been much in the news with plenty of street demonstrations and riot police. The Drachma has not yet been re-introduced. The weather was horrible. Thought this might be a good place for a run.
The Athens Classic Marathon as it is billed is the route run 2501 years ago by an Athenian soldier bringing news of the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon over the invading Persians. Having completed it he collapsed and died.
The Marathon Race starts from the Marathon Start Venue in the City of Marathonas. The competitors are bussed out very efficiently from Athens. The catch being is you get the bus at 05.30 am local time and they are 2 hours in front. Rather early for the pre –run muesli !
It is a smaller marathon than some of the other major marathons with only 12000 runners – nearly all male.

The first 200m of the course are sloping, leading to the exit of the Marathon Start Venue. The first 4 kilometers go downhill. The course follows a rather circular route around the War Memorial for those that died during the Marathon Battle (Marathon Tomb).

The course becomes flat from the 6th to the 10thkm. From the 11th to the 17thkm the course goes uphill at certain parts. Then, and before the Rafina Junction, the runners meet a steep descent. Starting from the Rafina Junction, the course goes uphill again, while the most difficult part is until the 20th km. As the runners pass along the district of Pikermi, they run through some, more or less, uphill parts of the course up to the 25th km. The passage through the city of Pallini (27th – 28thkm) is also rising. The last and most difficult part of the course starts from Gerakas and goes up to Agia Paraskevi (30th – 31st km). Then it is downhill!!!
The marathon ends in the Panathinaikon Stadium, built for the first modern Olympics and very impressive.
I really enjoyed it and the 8°C temperature and the rain helped me to a personal best of 03:34:13 It is not the prettiest of runs and is certainly hilly – Cornwall is good training.
I think the dual carriage way for the 26 miles from Marathon to Athens has been added since the first run 2501 years ago. The road was closed on both sides and the management of the race was excellent. Athens allowed runners to have half price public transport and entry to the Acropolis site and museum for the duration of their stay. It is not suprising that the economy is bust.

Truro Running club with some of the founding members - spot who's still here today!
Nigel’s been digging around in his cupboards (ooh er missis!) and found a couple of old team photos that include some of the original and founding club members.
At least 7 people in the photo are still with the club today, see if you can spot who they are! Â You want clues? Well, here’s one or two then… One of them’s our performance coach, another one is our treasurer, oh and one of them’s our secretary – and the bearded one at the back, you’ll definitely know him!
If you really can’t guess you can find out by going to a new page that’s being put together in the member’s section (menu bar above) called Early Days. Maybe you’ve got some old photos or memories that you’d like to share? If you have just drop me a line and I’ll be really glad to add them. After 13 years there must be some great things floating around!
While a number of us from the club will be organising or running in the Charles Stanley City of Truro Half Marathon on the 18th September, one of our members will be missing…
Lynne - all smiles before a race earlier this year!
Lynne Donahue will be heading for the start lines of The Great North Run in Newcastle, The North’s iconic half marathon event. She’ll be joining 54,000 other runners and is raising money for local charity Cornwall Hospice Care. Lynne’s put up a sponsor form on the noticeboard in the rugby club house for anyone that would like to sponsor her, so bring a pen this evening!
Good luck Lynne! We look forward to hearing about it when you get back – maybe a report and some photos?!!!! Â Have a great run

AGM Wednesday 6th July 2011
A large gathering of TRC members stayed behind after Wednesday’s club run for the AGM – followed by a delicious buffet and beer, which may had something to do with it!
The minutes of the meeting will be published here as soon as they’re available, but in the mean time, here’s a very short praise of some of the decisions made:
Committee
- Chair – Keith Wotton: re-elected
- Vice Chair/Membership Secretary – Nick Jeans: re-elected
- Club Secretary – Nigel Knuckey: re-elected
- Treasurer – Adrian Tyas: re-elected
- Head Coach – Rob Cockings: re-elected
- GP Co-ordinator – Alison Joslin: re-elected
- THM Race Director – Diane Boardman: re-elected
- Website Manager – Stephanie Boon: re-elected
- Committee Member – Richard Wilson: re-elected
- Committee Member – Jeremy Sharp: resigned
- New Committee Member – Andy Goundry: elected
- New Committee Member – Rachel Palemer: elected
- New Committee Member – Mel Findler: elected
It was felt it was good to see a broader representation of age groups and gender on the committee for the coming year.
- New Club Official – Kenza Thorn. It was agreed that the club noticeboard should be properly used and kept up to date and Kenza kindly volunteered to take this on – so if you’ve got anything interesting or any suggestions for the noticeboard Kenza’s your woman!
Finances
- The club made a minor loss last year (< ÂŁ100), but it was noted that a substantial amount was given to charity. It was agreed that this year a smaller percentage would be donated (50% of the proceeds of the THM will go to Mind) and the remainder will be invested into club activities (eg coaching facilities).
- Club subs will remain the same, but there will now be a reduced rate of ÂŁ10 pa for those in full time education.
Coaching
- Rob’s keen to recruit more Leaders and Coaches in Running Fitness. Adrian Tyas will be training as a coach in the near future and Rob would like to hear from anyone else that would like to join the coaching team as a Leader. (Plenty more info will be in the minutes!).
Social
- It was agreed the new monthly socials in the heart of Truro have been a success and the first Rave Run of the year was also very successful. There has been poor response to the planned summer beach bbq.
- Christmas: (yes I know, but I’ve already seen Christmas decorations in Trago’s garden department!!) a straw pole of the members at the meeting indicated that a Christmas celebration before Christmas would be preferred, unlike previous years. It was also noted that members would prefer to celebrate somewhere other than the rugby club and a hotel venue was suggested.
Celebrations!
At the AGM the club awards trophies to members for their efforts during the previous year and this year there was all round applause for those selected:
Runners of the Year
- Tony Berry
Tony was recognised as being an inspiration to us all, achieving amazing things in his age category (75+), including being ranked 4th in the World over the Half Marathon Distance. Â He achieved this in Melbourne, Australia in 2010, running in 1:33:51
- Anne Maskell
It was agreed one word sums up Anne’s incredible racing achievements and attitude to her sport: hardcore!!! Look up the results of any of the races she enters and you’ll find her at the top of the list. She’s regularly in the top three open and if Anne decides to enter a race you pretty much know she’ll win her age category! Â Awesome!
Most Improved Runners of the Year
- Andrew Langdon
It was recognised that Andrew has achieved incredible things since coming back from major injuries/health problems that would have kept the rest of us mortals out of action permanently.  Prior to illness Andrew was a very successful competitive runner and has just begun racing again running Cubert 5 in an amazing 0:33:12!
- Diane Boardman
Diane was a self-declared 10 minute miler, but sometime around Christmas 2010 she got the bit between her teeth and decided she wanted to run faster. Working on drills with Kev Harding, track sessions with CAC and lots of encouragement from Rob, her hard work paid off when she ran the Manchester 10k this May in an impressive 0:53:34 – knocking a clear 6 minutes off her personal best at Enys in Penryn a few weeks before.
Club Member of the Year
- Stephanie Boon
Erm, I think you might like the website?!
Don’t forget the minutes will be published as soon as they’re available so check back to get the full picture.

 Sam
Halstead and Essex Marathon
Whilst 18 of us may have lined up for the Trevornick 10 on Sunday morning, Sam Westlake (pictured here at An Res Hellys in March) was not surprisingly the only TRC runner lined up for the Halstead & Essex Marathon! The race is described as being “mainly through quiet and picturesque country lanes” near the border of Essex and Suffolk.
Sam ran a fantastic race coming in 1st place for her category (F45) and 73rd overall from a field of 608, in a time of 03:30:09.
The full results of the marathon can be found on Full On Sports and should you fancy adding it to your calendar for next year more information about the race can be found on Halstead Road Runners website.
Congratulations Sam! A fantastic achievement that I’m sure will be inspiring to many of us at the club.
