I am pleased and very relieved to let you know that I passed my technical test and assessment today so I am now officially a Level 3 Coach . Many thanks to you all for your support and particularly to Rob for all his advice and help. I am so glad its all over and I can relax and enjoy my coaching and running now.
See you next week.
Adrian.
What came first – The Chicken or the Egg/The Athlete or the Coach?
By Rob Cockings
I realise that very often when you talk to runners about coaching they’re happy to be told what it can do for them as an athlete, but they do not consider it something that they would actually do themselves. I can fully appreciate why, as runners we all want to strive to do the best in our sport, and to take up coaching can be perceived as a hindrance to our training efforts. But without a good base of coaching at a club it can prove difficult to offer varied and purposeful training.
Presently at our own club we are fortunate enough to have a great team of seven LiRFs (Leaders in Running Fitness), including Adrian Tyas who is currently working to achieve the excellent new Coach in Running Fitness qualification, which is the equivalent to a Level 2/3 Coach qualification and myself with the old generic Level 2 Coach qualification. We also have our ex Head Coach, Kev Harding available in the summer for grass ‘track sessions’ and for supplying bespoke training programmes for members.
On the face of it this doesn’t seem bad at all, but for us to keep our club attractive to potential new members and compete with other sports and running clubs in the county, and to ensure we can provide our established members with a varied and worthwhile training environment, we need to bolster our Coach/Leader team with another two coaches and at least three LiRFs. This will improve coaching good practice, spread the training workload and help to fill gaps in training provision when sickness and work commitments reduce our Coach/Leader team levels and also importantly allow Coaches and Leaders to train on club nights - “We’re runners too!”
So if you’ve had any thoughts at all on taking up coaching or becoming a Leader in Running Fitness, please really consider doing so, as you can become part of a team that has already made a really positive contribution to the health of the club and you really can make a difference. It won’t cost you anything but time, as the club will pay for any coaching courses we send you on and you’ll be guaranteed the full support of your Coach/Leader team.
For more details on becoming a Coach or LiRF, please contact me at rcockings@cornwall.gov.uk / 07971827436 – Thank you.

Rob will back at the club this Wednesday taking any willing volunteers (aka masochists!) onto Bodmin Road for a coached session of hill reps. (Perfect timing for Mounts Bay 10k coming up soon). There will of course be other groups doing City Centre Loops if you prefer to take part in these.
Coaching News
Amelya at the Great Flat Lode race 2011
Rob welcomes Amelya Lyndsay on to the coaching team after she successfully completed the Leader in Running Fitness course held at Biscovey Junior school on Saturday. Congratulations Amelya – and thank you for all your enthusiasm and commitment to the club!
Adrian Tyas also had the third day of his Coaching in Runners Fitness course a couple of weekends back and although he’s still got plenty of work to do to before he gets to assessment day, it looks like all the hard work will pay off and we’ll soon have a fully fledged CiRF in the ranks. In the mean time Adrian’s using the Monday night runners as guinea pigs, so why not lend your support and come along and join in?!
If you’re interested in joining the coaching team, there are a number of courses available (which are paid for by the club), along with lots of support from the team, so please see Rob for more details.
Rob Cockings has secured a special evening’s coaching for this week, so make sure you bring your good legs along!
“Viv Mathews an England Athletics Flying Coach is visiting our club this Weds, 7th Sept, to deliver a workshop on ‘up hill running technique’ and he will utilise a ‘hills session’ to provide the practical side of the workshop, plus a Q+A session at the rugby club house afterwards.”
Sounds good, I could do with some tips after Sunday’s Treggy 7! See you there.
