The Eden Project Marathon

Congratulations to Isobel Wykes and Steve Rawson for being brave enough to enter this gruelling event on the memorable date of 09.10.11! Both our runners finished in amazing times as you can see below, with Isobel coming home 2nd lady overall (sadly missing out on the £250 1st prize – a bottle of wine and snazzy trophy would have to do, this time…)

Having had a few hours to rest her legs, Isobel puts pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard!) to wax lyrical about her experience in the 3rd Eden Marathon!

Eden Marathon

I left my family back at home,
On my way to the Eden biome.
9.10.11, that was the date,
Better get going, don’t want to be late.

Got to the start in plenty of time,
Must go for a wee, better join the line.
The start of the marathon and off we run,
Mud, wind, and rain – definitely no sun.

The first of the hills and its a long way up,
The reward is a drink in a white plastic cup.
Through the clay hills in the pouring rain,
Gotta be tough, don’t think of the pain.

Early on in the race and I met Roger,
A nice friendly  chap – a Teignbridge Trotter!
We ran together for the rest of the race,
Chatting away and trying to keep up the pace.

At mile 16 my legs started to ache,
Was doing a marathon a great big mistake?
But with an energy gel and another jelly baby,
Before I knew it I could see the 2nd lady.

Roger picked up the pace and started to go faster,
The girl in front? Well, we’d now overtaken her.
With the end in sight, I couldn’t do anymore,
Crossed the line in 3:24!!!
